Kobo Vox Backlight

I received a lot of hits from people Googling “Kobo Vox backlight”. It appears that Kobo’s site steers clear of actually mentioning that it has a backlight. The E-ink technology used in Kobo’s previous e-readers is black and white only. The fact that the new Kobo Vox will be in vivid colour means it’s a backlit tablet.

I contacted Kobo’s PR peeps to see if they could comment on how “reader-friendly” the Kobo Vox will be.  He said that he had yet to try the Kobo Vox himself (even the PR reps had to wait for shipment).

However, he mentioned that Kobo Vox uses the most advanced 7 inch AFFS+ display with anti-glare. Tablets Planet says that it’s comparable to Nook Colour and Kindle Fire.

The rep also explained that Kobo decided to go with this display because colour E-ink technology is still in development. This makes me wonder how many years away we are from a fully-functioning colour e-ink display AND when we’ll see a dual e-ink/backlight device. Kindle Fire was rumoured to be a dual display tablet but the rumours turned out to be untrue.

Oh! And the Kobo Vox comes with three free colour e-books. Wonder if one of them will be the Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar?
